Julie Beaufils
Julie Beaufils paints primarily in a muted palette. Her lyrical, sparsely elegant forms lie somewhere between figuration and abstraction, and her canvases often possess the fast, fleeting strokes of sketch drawing. “The aura of painting, its substance and presence, is precious,” she says. “And this is an essential function of the medium: it’s beautiful because it returns to primitive and powerful emotions.”
Julie Beaufils (b. 1987, Sèvres, France) lives and works in Paris. She graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2010 and also studied at the University of Southern California’s Roski School of Art in Los Angeles. Her first solo exhibition took place at Balice Hertling in 2014, followed by solo shows at the gallery in 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2023. Together with Balice Hertling, Beaufils recently exhibited her work at Art Basel's Unlimited (2024), as well as in venues such as CAPC - Musée d’Art Contemporain (Bordeaux, 2024); Fondation Vincent Van Gogh (Arles, 2023); Sifang Art Museum (Shanghai, 2022); "Palai" at Palazzo Tamborino Cezzi (Lecce, 2021); Palais de Tokyo Extramuros (Zurich, 2016); La Kunsthalle (Mulhouse, 2016); and Fondation Pernod Ricard (Paris, 2014).
