Biography

Hongyan, born in 1966 in Beijing, is an artist whose work is deeply influenced by personal experiences and meditative practices. Her art often explores the concept of borders, both visible and invisible, physical and metaphysical. She is fascinated by depicting boundaries, as seen in her observations of snails crawling inside and outside of glass windows and fish swimming in transparent plastic bags. Hongyan’s paintings serve as exclamations, capturing moments that challenge perceptions and invite viewers to question the limitations of their own perspectives.

Hongyan (b. 1966, China) currently lives and works in Beijing. She holds a master’s degree in microbiology and began painting in 2015, developing a contemplative practice inspired by meditation and the unconscious. Her work has been exhibited in solo shows at Antenna Space (Shanghai, 2024); Beijing Gallery Weekend (Beijing, 2022); Bill Cournoyer / The Meeting (New York, 2022); Meessen de Clercq (Brussels, 2020); and Balice Hertling (Paris, 2019), where she had her first solo exhibition with the gallery. She also participated in a group show at Balice Hertling in 2022.
